In A Vehicle
- When
parking your car, choose locations that are well
lit. If parking at a lot, select one that has
an attendant on duty.
If you must leave your key in the vehicle
when parking in an attended lot, remove it from
the key ring and take all other keys with you.
- When
returning to your car at night, have someone
accompany you whenever possible. Look into the
back seat before getting into your car. It is
useful to carry a pocket flashlight with you.
- Lock
all doors when you get into your car. Roll down
your windows only part way, so that someone cannot
reach in to unlock your door.
- If
you are being followed by another vehicle, honk
your horn, and drive to a public place, or to a
police station.
- Be
certain that your car is in good mechanical
condition. Check your tires and gasoline gauge before setting out.
If your car does break down, raise the
hood, leave your lights on, and remain inside the
car with the doors locked.
When someone stops to assist you, roll down
your window slightly, and ask the person to phone
for help. If,
when you are driving along, you notice someone
having difficulty, determine what help is needed
and call for help at the nearest phone. Do not
risk your own safety by getting out of the car or
offering a ride.
- When
taking a taxi, sit in the back seat. Be alert to
the route that is being taken. Check the
identification card and vehicle number so that a
report can be made later if you encounter a
problem.
- If
you travel by bus, be aware of persons getting off
the bus with you, to ensure that you are not being
followed. It
may be preferable to arrange alternate
transportation than to wait at a bus stop alone
late at night.
